What’s nice about getting lost is not getting lost. Armed with printed out screencaps from Google Maps and my trusty iPad, I set out to explore Kuala Lumpur’s Lake Gardens on my first day in the big city. It was scary to be alone in such a busy place, but I quickly gathered my wits and managed to find my way around. Before leaving for KL, my grandpa e-mailed me sound advice about travelling alone. Don’t hesitate to ask. The rapport one can establish between the locals and one’s self is fun and informative, and it tells you a lot about their culture and way of life. I happened upon two traffic enforcers on my way to the Lake Gardens, and they were very helpful in my quest in the urban jungle that is KL. Not only did they send me on my way with sound directions, but they also proved my maps were right. I must have walked almost 10km in the span of a day, but my sore feet (and the blisters I still have!) are worth it.
